FIRST IMPRESSION of GUYANA
My trip to Guyana was fun as it was a trip with friends I had met while attending University here in Jamaica. Let me start off by saying to visit Guyana as a Jamaican you do not need a Visa.
Was it what I expected?… To be honest I try not to set expectations for places I just travel. find activities to do and enjoy. While in Guyana I did just that. It kind of reminded me of here in Jamaica. For example, seeing the school children in the school uniforms and the taxis.
THINGS TO DO IN GUYANA
No doubt there are many other things to do in Guyana but here are a few based on experience.
✔ LYMES – While there I realized that a big thing they like doing there is having Lymes (which are simple hangouts where you drink and talk with friends).
✔ NIGHTLIFE – I managed to go to a few clubs and parties which were great.
✔ ARROWPOINT NATURE RESORT – My biggest takeaway was when I went to a place called Arrow Point Nature Resort, I loved it there, just the journey to get there was interesting as we had to go by boat, then kayak.
If anyone knows me I live for that stuff, I love nature and I love being outdoors. Mind you I was afraid at some points because…for a big adventurer it is embarrassing to say, I can’t swim BUT will definitely be doing lessons someday.
While at Arrowpoint we did a little jungle trek on foot and also by bike. What also stood out to me is that these tours were done by Amerindians. You can check out more details about it here if you are planning a trip there soon. You can also do Canoeing/Kayaking, play beach volleyball, fishing, and bird watching.
The only thing I didn’t get the chance to do was the night tour which I definitely want to do if I visit there again. The night tour gives you a chance to see the nightlife of the surrounding animals as well as they do a bonfire. What was different for me was the color of the water in Guyana which had a black color. I also got to see the Demerara River which was hugeee it looked like the sea, only…Brown.
✔ EAT OUT AT CARA LODGE HOTELCara Lodge is a nice quiet area where you can enjoy a great meal with friends and family.
✔ VISIT GUYANA ZOOLOGICAL PARK AND BOTANICAL GARDEN Here is famous for the Kissing Bridge as well as the variety of animals that you can see here. It is also a great activity for a nice day out.
✔ VISIT THE GUYANA NATIONAL MUSEUM – If you like history or just enjoy learning about the culture of different countries then this is a good place to visit and learn more.
✔ VISIT STABROEK MARKET – Shopping, shopping, and more shopping.
✔ VISIT AN AMERINDIAN VILLAGE – Now this was quite interesting to see, to get to the one I visited we had to go by boat. The people were there in their community they made things and sold such as great headbands and I got a wonderful set of placemats.
FOOD
The food in Guyana was a bit challenging for me. Maybe it was where I was but then you had some really good food. I am not fussy when traveling about food as I like to try different stuff. While used to some popular fast-food chains here in Jamaica or when I travel to other locations, I was told to not even bother trying the ones there.
I decided to try one and can I tell you it was awful? I did, however, try a Church’s Chicken which turned out to be the best and easiest thing to get when I was there. Then I also remember going by a place called Cara Lodge Hotel you can check it out it was a great place to dine. Another thing that I love is coconut water, the coconut water in Guyana is sweet and refreshing, it is available at any hour of the day or night.
I am used to Cassava Chips as well, but how they eat it, with this sauce that they call ‘Sour’ it is sooo good. Guyana is where I learned some interesting mixes which I love to this day such as pineapple with salt and pepper. Similar to how you do mangoes with salt and pepper. I definitely want to visit there again soon. Georgetown Guyana was a treat.
