Teach English Online Without a Degree/ TESOL Jobs and TEFL Jobs
This is a concise list of possible companies you can apply to so that you can teach English online without a degree. I will go more in-depth with some of them and their interview process so if you wish to teach I will walk you through that.
As a Jamaican, I could write about the challenges of being an ESL Teacher and how companies may overlook you because of specific reasons. *hint hint* However not all companies are like that, my recommendation is to apply to the ones that accept applications from you even if it isn’t stated on their sites and try your luck, or do certifications with a company that helps you with finding jobs afterward, unfortunately, I didn’t have that luxury, I got certified with Uni-Prep and I know now they help with that.
Can I teach English online without a degree?
YES 100%, I however do recommend that you complete the certification course. Not many companies will hire you without it.
What qualifications are needed?
Intro Video – This is a video introducing yourself. It may be different for each company as to what they want in that video.
Certification – Since the pandemic and a bit before there were so many companies that are now offering certification. Whichever course you do just make sure it is accredited and you have seen some positive reviews on them. Here are some places where you can get the certification done.
What tools and equipment are needed to start teaching?
I created a post some time ago with TOOLS you need to start teaching online. Basically, you need a headset, microphone, blank background, quiet environment, and good connection. The post is more detailed and covers some additional tools you may need.
1. CAMBLY
Cambly is maybe if not one of the easiest companies to get into once you are within the location stated below. The great thing about Cambly is that you can teach English online without a degree, certification, or experience. Does it get much better than that? Cambly students are both adults and children as well as they are one-o-one lessons.
Where does Cambly hire from?
They hire native speakers from:
Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, and the United States.
How long does Cambly take to approve applications?
Cambly usually responds within a matter of days or even hours as well as how quickly you complete the application form.
Salary and Hours for Cambly:
Time is usually tracked for the calls because the times may be different.
Cambly usually makes payments weekly. On Mondays, the Cambly teachers are paid $0.17 per minute which is $10.20 per hour, and 0.20 per minute which is $12.00 per hour for Cambly Kids. Cambly has a very flexible schedule and no minimum hours are required.
You get the chance to choose your own hours based on your availability.

The application process is clear and without any live demo.
Lesson plans are available if needed.
Most students prefer conversational lessons to practice.
Flexible schedule with no minimum hours and just a 12-hour cancellation needed.
They do have priority houRs where you are guaranteed a portion of income, even if you get no calls.
CON’S
Cambly only hires native speakers.
Payment is only done through PayPal, so if PayPal is not in your country then it wouldn’t work for you.
Low pay, as students have the option to choose lessons that are 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or one hour long.
2. iTALKI
ABOUT ITALKI
iTalki is another company where you can teach English online without a degree or any specific qualifications, however, if you wish to become a Professional Teacher then you have to show proof of your capabilities with certification and experience. Before applying for iTalki it is ideal to check and see what opportunities are open before applying as sometimes they may be closed. iTalki is good for not just English but other languages too and you have two options to be a Professional teacher or a Community Tutor.
Community tutor is more informal and doesn’t require documentation. As a professional teacher, you are required to do an introduction video. Lessons are usually one-on-one with students of all ages, however, you mostly find that adults use the platform.
Where does iTalki hire from?
iTalki, thankfully is one of those companies that hire from all over both native and non-native speakers.
How long does iTalki take to approve applications?
It takes about 10 business days just to get your application reviewed then possibly another 15 days to go through the onboarding process in order to actually begin with iTalki.
Salary and Hours for iTalki:
iTalki usually processes payment within two cycles per month, so it does have to do with when and how you request your payment. However, you can only request one payment in each cycle.
iTalki is really a huge marketplace so because of this you are able to set your hours as you would like however on average it’s about $15.00 per hour.
Lessons on iTalki can be 45, 60, or 90 minutes, which is based on your time and availability, trial lessons however are 30 minutes long.
iTalki Method of Payment
With iTalki, payments are usually made through PayPal or Payoneer. There is however a minimum withdrawal amount of $30. Also, remember that these platforms may also take a small percentage.
PRO’S
It is a very big place to find students as it is a huge marketplace.
Thankfully with iTalki the process to begin is pretty simple, it doesn’t require any kind of demo or interviews.
Lessons can be scheduled at any time – 24/7 as there are students all over, there are however peak hours available also.
iTalki offers the opportunity to use different platforms for the lessons.
CON’S
iTalki does take commission and this is because you are using their platform to get new students.
You will have to create your own lesson plans, they do however have resources you can use. (this can be a pro or con)
iTalki can be a bit competitive, you have to offer a good price or packages and participate in the community and attract students.
3. TUTLO
ABOUT TUTLO
Tutlo also allows you to teach English online without a degree. It is a Polish company. To teach English online without a degree with Tutlo you do need to have a teaching certificate. The good thing is that they have a TEFL Scholarship that can be received by individuals who pass the interview. Tutlo does however require that you have a minimum of 6 months of experience teaching English. Tutlo is a small company so not much information about work experience with them is available.
Where does Tutlo hire from?
Tutlo hires from the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa. I am not 100% sure in all honesty, but if you are from other countries you can try your luck as they do seem a bit flexible with where they hire from.
How long does Tutlo take to approve applications?
With Tutlo you usually get your interview results within 24 hours. There application process does require an intro video.
Salary and Hours for Tutlo:
Tutlo usually pays monthly. Their salary is usually around $6- $11
Tutlo Method of Payment
Tutlo payments are usually made using PayPal.
PRO’S
Lesson material is provided.
The fact is that you can get your ESL certification for free once you pass the interview.
They offer additional training to improve your skills.
CON’S
This can be seen as a con but Tutlo is a relatively small ESL company so not much info is available about them.
4. AMAZING TALKER
ABOUT AMAZING TALKER
I can personally talk about this company as I have experience with it. Amazing talker is also a student marketplace website that does not require any certification or degree. Amazing talker is a one-on-one lesson with either an adult or a child.
Where does Amazing Talker hire from?
They hire both native and non-native speakers from all over, you are even considered if you do not have experience.
How long does Amazing Talker take to approve applications?
With Amazing talker you can get started in under a week, there isn’t a long interview process you will just be required to do a little demo lesson to make sure you are ready.
Salary and Hours for Amazing Talker
Lessons are usually 50 minutes and trial lessons are $25 minutes. On average teachers make $15-28 for the 50-minutes and $6-10 for the trial lessons. It really does range though based on where you are from and what you are teaching.
The beauty about it being a marketplace too is that lessons are available any hour of the day but they also do have peak hours which is where you will find the most students.
Amazing Talker Method of Payment
Amazing talker usually makes their payment through PayPal, Payoneer or Wise, however, you have to remember that each comes with its own charges.
PRO’S
You set your own pricing
There is the potential for you to earn well if you are consistent.
No interview process.
The possibility to teach other subjects.
CON’S
No lesson plan or materials are available.
The platform can be a bit competitive and you need to be quick and alert to get students before you miss them
Can be hard to attract students at first, but you will get there.
Of course, being a marketplace, they too require a commission for your use of their platform.
