How do I eliminate the fear of visiting Rose Hall Great House?
Something many people say as they hear of the historical plantation that is said to be haunted by the spirit of Annie Palmer also knows as the White Witch. The mansion can be found perched on a hill in the Rose Hall area of St. James. The amazing architectural building has a very interesting history and known as one of the most impressive plantation houses across the island and because of this, it is now operated as a museum. I won’t dive into the full details of the tour as I do want you to go and experience this for yourself. the YouTube Video below gives you an idea of the tour.
HISTORY
If you look back Johnny Cash had a song he sang called The Ballad of Annie Palmer. He talks about her tale of having killed her three husbands. This is a photo of a clock that was gifted by Johnny Cash. It is actually a pretty good song. To be honest there is no need to be afraid while visiting there it has so much rich history that you can learn about and just don’t provoke Annie…lol simple as that.
ROSE HALL GREAT HOUSE TOUR
Rose Hall Great House Tours operate all year round. When I went I was able to just go and do the tour I didn’t have to make an appointment and no one else was doing the tour at that time. Feel free to check out Rose Hall Great House to find out more about Tour costing for both locals and international travelers. The tour takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.
WHO WAS ANNIE PALMER?
Annie Palmer was born in England then moved to Haiti when she was ten years old. This is where she learned witchcraft, later on she was looking for a husband and heard about the rich plantation owners in Jamaica and upon coming to Jamaica and becoming a plantation owner, however she was seen as a cruel woman hence the name the Wicked Witch of the West.
THE MANSION
The tour starts with you entering the ballroom of the great house. As you enter you are greeted by exquisite furniture and paintings that just shows you the type of history associated with the great house. Annie Palmer was seen as the White Witch of Rose Hall as she was born in England but then she moved to Haiti at the age of 10, then in search of a wealthy man as she got older she traveled to Jamaica and found her first husband. The picture below shows her bedroom in which she was killed by her slave lover.
THE DUNGEON
Following the tour of the house, you are then taken to the dungeon which is where the slaves were taken to be punished. Of course, if it is a dungeon it was dark. Rose Hall Great House usually offers Spooky Night Tours also however not at the moment due to COVID19 and restrictions but it is definitely amidst my bucket list.
In the dungeon, there is a collection of photos and letters by persons sharing the experiences they had from visiting the great house. Some persons mention seeing faces in the bed frame, as well as pictures of the mirror. To be honest one of the mirror ones got me, but didn’t want to post it here to make persons afraid.
THE GRAVESIDE
The last lap takes you to the graveside where Annie Palmer is said to have been buried. No real confirmation of that though. Down the road currently, there are three Palm Trees planted in honor of her three husbands that she killed. I didn’t want to give away the full history so I leave it to you to go and take the tour and tell me how you liked it!
