We are going through the age of constant connection where we are always online, or have the feeling that we need to always be online and reachable to the world. For some it is really tough to take a break from our devices, but sometimes is it more than necessary for our mental health…TRUST me! I personally am digitally detoxing more so on the weekend, or sometimes I will take the whole week. So here is the concept of digital detox – and a revolutionary approach to help you unplug, unwind, and find inner peace.

In this blog post, we’ll dive deep into the world of digital detox, explore its benefits, and go through some practical tips for a successful digital cleanse. WHAT IS DIGITAL DETOX?

A digital detox is just a way way to take a break from technology and disconnect from the digital world. It’s a period of time when you choose to refrain from using devices such as smartphones, computers, tablets, and social media sites. By forgoing digital devices, at least temporarily, you can let go of the stress that stems from constant connectivity and focus on real-life social interactions without distractions.

There are many reasons why you might want to do a digital detox. You might want to enjoy time to yourself without the interference that your phone and other devices create. In other cases, you might feel like your device use has become excessive and is adding too much stress to your life. In some situations, you might even feel like you are addicted to your devices. Whatever your reason, it’s important to take a break from technology every once in a while to recharge and reconnect with the real world.

BENEFITS OF DETOXING

  1. Improved Sleep: The first thing we hear all the time all over is that we should put down the electronic devices before bed as this can affect and disrupt our sleep pattern.
  2. Reduced Stress: There can be stress from information overload and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is a real thing. Taking a break can reduce stress levels and just allows you to be more present.
  3. Increased Productivity: When we consistently check out devices then we really are not as productive as we can be. This was a personal challenge for me at first but now I have specific times when I use my phone throughout the day. Even in doing this it’s where people feel like you should be readily available. Digitally detoxing can help us refocus both in our work and personal life.
  4. Better Relationships: If we are always on out electronic devices we really are not that present with the people around us. It can help us improve our communication skills in our relationships.
  5. Improved Mental Health: Too much screentime can affect your mental health, it can cause anxiety and depression, so digital detoxification helps your overall wellbeing.
  6. Technology addiction: Some people literally become addicted to their devices. This can lead to physical, psychological, and social problems and can be difficult to overcome.

STEPS FOR DIGITAL CLEANSE

  1. SET BOUNDARIES: Setting a certain amount of time that you plan to disconnect and stick to it. It could be a day, week, month whatever works for you. If people are concerned about reaching you then prep them about that time.
  2. ASSESS DIGITAL TRIGGER: Turn off the sounds and distractions that come with all those pesky notifications. Find out what causes you to go for your devices, are you always checking your e-mail, social media or messages?
  3. FIND ALTERNATIVES: Try to plan alternative activities that don’t involve the screen, go for a ride, go to the beach or go visit a river, read a book, spend time with friends and family, just find something without a screen.
  4. REMOVE THE TEMPTATION: If you wish you can put your devices in a separate location than where you usually sleep just to reduce the temptation of checking it all the time.
  5. BE MINDFUL: Practice mindfulness, try to focus on present moments as they happen. Meditate and do breathing exercises too.
  6. REFLECT: After your detox, Reflect on how the process was for you, what changed, what improved, what you learned and what changes you notice in your life and use it to make positive decisions moving forward.

The key thing to remember is that digital detox doesn’t mean cutting yourself off completely, it is really about finding a healthy balance. You can use your Sunday Reset day as a day for your detox.

How to Prepare for a Digital Detox Program

Creating a Log to Track Technology Use

Before starting, it is important to have a log so you can track your use of technology throughout the period of time. Doing this will help you to know where and what is taking up most of your time. From this you can then create realistic goals for your detox.

Identifying Negative Consequences and Positive Results

Think about the negative and positive outcomes of this process. Positive may be more productivity and better sleep, while the negative may be decrease productivity and lack of sleep.

Finding a Partner for Accountability

If you have a friend or a partner who can hold you accountable throughout this process that is even better. Just having someone to check in every now and then to make sure you are committed to the task and staying on track.

Supporting Yourself with Positive Statements

It’s important to support yourself with positive statements during this time, you can try affirmations, write them on your bathroom mirror, your door, wherever.

The 1-Week Digital Detox Program

Let’s begin our our 1-week digital detox program!

Day 1: Preparation and Goal Setting

  • Set clear gals for you detox, make a note of why you wish to do this and what you want to achieve from it.
  • Look at how these devices have been affecting your life, relationships, productivity and overall wellbeing and quality of life.
  • Find the specific areas of you life where you need to tone down, whether it is social media, gaming or just too much time on your mobile or computer.
  • Think of all the activities you can decide to engage in as a distractor from the digital needs.
  • Tell your friends and family that you are going on this detox and when your time of availability may be.

Day 2: Declutter Your Digital Life

  • Clean up your digital devices so that you have a clear and clutter free environment. Remove all unnecessary apps that you do not need that are taking up unnecessary space on your system.
  • Create your own system so you can manage notifications effectively, so which notifications are important and which ones are non-essential, or you can just activate ‘Do not disturb” mode during specific times of day.
  • Organize any digital files and folders that you need to to keep things stable and organized.

Day 3: Create Physical Boundaries

  • Put together some physical boundaries to cut down the digital distraction, create a device free sone, where once you are there no devices should be present. It could be the living room, bathroom, wherever.
  • Get an actual alarm clock instead of using your phone as an alarm, that way you don’t have to take up your phone first thing in the morning.
  • Set up a space outside of your bedroom for charging your devices.

Day 4: Mindful Technology Usage

  • When you do use technology throughout the day be mindful of what you do on it and be very intentional.
  • Have time blocks for when you will use your devices and more than anything else, stick to it. For example set 20 minutes in the day for checking e-mails.
  • Set limits on your phone if you can. For example all my apps go offline for 1 hour each night just to give me peace of mind for that short time.

Day 5: Engage in Offline Activities

  • Choose a full day to dedicate to doing things offline that bring you relaxation, peace and personal growth.
  • Exercise, go for a walk, do some gardening, go to the beach, just get outside.
  • Find a new hobby, maybe you like painting, writing or you even want to play a musical instrument. Or maybe you like to cook….find something and give it a try.
  • Go out or invite friends or family over, try to spend some quality time with loved ones.

Day 6: Reflect and Reevaluate

  • Reflect on the past few days of your digital detox.
  • Write about what you have been observing, how is your mood, and how do you feel? Any changes? How are your relationships? How is your mental clarity?
  • Reevaluate your digital habits and decide what changes you want to incorporate into your post-detox routine.

Day 7: Create a Digital Wellness Plan

  • Based on your reflections and insights, create a long-term digital wellness plan for yourself and create realistic goals.
  • Establish boundaries and routines that promote a healthy balance between technology and other aspects of your life.
  • Think about implementing periodic digital detoxes, like weekends or a monthly detox day, to maintain a healthy relationship with technology.
  • Continuously evaluate and adjust your digital wellness plan as needed to ensure it aligns with your evolving needs and priorities.

Remember, a digital detox is a personal journey, and it’s important to o customize this kind of program based on your specific circumstances and goals. Be kind to yourself throughout the process and celebrate the small victories along the way.

    1. lol its the same for me…but work in progress, I’m more aware of it and making some changes this year lol it can be hard though especially when we have things like blogs to promote lol but work in progress.
