Organizing life, boosting productivity and maintaining a clear mind is something I believe many of us strive for. Trust me on that. It is something that I am slowly getting better at which is why I can talk about this as I tried so many different things.

But, you know what it’s not always as easy as it sounds. Our minds can become cluttered with information and tasks that weigh us down and hinder our productivity. My mind is gifted for that it runs millions of miles per hour so I really had to just take a step back and try organizing life as best as I could.

There are some novel and effective ways to declutter your mind and start organizing life as you know it. I will be talking about 9 out-of-the-box strategies to help you do just that.

Organizing Life: 9 Ways to Declutter Your Mind and Boost Productivity

1. Take a Mental Vacation

Life can get overwhelming at times and sometimes people can can make life overwhelming at times and so it’s crucial to give yourself a break and declutter your mind. Taking a mental vacation can help you recharge, gain clarity, and boost your overall productivity. I believe that I have been on a mental vacation for the past month which I believe was NEEDED. For no one else but myself for better clarity and growth. Here are 2 ways to go on mental vacation:

Engage in Creative Activities

One amazing way to take a mental vacation and a closer step to organizing life is to take part in creative activities. Whether it’s painting, writing, as you guys saw I have been writing a lot more in different area, playing a musical instrument, or even knitting or crocheting, creative outlets provide an escape from the daily grind and allow your mind to wander freely.

Part taking in creative activities can help to reduce stress levels, increase positive emotions and overall your well-being and help when organizing life. So why not organize your life and take up a paintbrush or two and get to work, or start a blog for fun and see where it goes. Heck you may even discover some hidden talents that you may have. Practice Visualization Exercises (Meditation)

Another one of life’s organization hacks to take a mental vacation is through visualization exercises. I know it sounds weird but it helps. Visualization involves creating vivid mental images of peaceful and serene settings. For me it allows my mind to escape the present moment and transports me to a place of tranquility and peace just for a moment or two before I snap back to reality. This is sometimes needed because man people can truly test your PEACEEE.

You can:

  • Find a quiet and comfortable space where no one will disturb you. Close your eyes and just take a few deep breaths to relax your body and mind. Then just imagine yourself in your dream destination, wherever that may be, on a nice beach in Jamaica, a mountain retreat, a lovely peaceful garden, anything. I want you to visualize everything be very detailed, the sounds, smells, feelings ….everything.
  • As you are fully into this space allow yourself to fully experience the calm, peace and tranquility of the location you choose. Try and stay in this peaceful state as long as you need to, releasing all worries and stress that are probably weighing you down. It helps reduce anxiety, increases focus, and promotes inner peace.
2. Embrace Minimalism

Minimalism is not just about decluttering your physical space; it’s also about simplifying your digital life and your mind.

Declutter Your Physical Space

There are many DIY organization hacks all over the internet. Have you ever noticed how a cluttered physical space can affect your mental state? I know it affects mine. When your surroundings are filled with unnecessary items, it can be quite hard to just concentrate and find peace of mind. By decluttering your physical space, you can create a more calm and organized environment that will help you declutter your mind as well. There is a book I read that really helped me to organize both my space and life and I would recommend it to everyone it is called Decluttered Mess to Organized Success.

Go through all your belongings and just get rid of anything that you no longer use, need or love. Only keep the things that truly bring you joy and serve a purpose in your life. As I declutter, I tend to ask myself, “Does this item add value to my life?” If the answer is no, it’s time to let it go, this was a hard thing for me to do in the past but now I realize some things just take up space, things that were not really needed.

Invest in storage solutions to keep your space tidy and organized. Use storage boxes, bins, and shelves to store items in a way that is visually appealing and easy to maintain. Remember, a clutter-free physical space leads to a clutter-free mind.

Simplify Your Digital Life

In today’s digital age, our devices and online activities can easily become overwhelming…TRUST. Endless notifications, countless emails, social media, insta-stalkers lol and an ever-growing list of apps can slow down our productivity and increase stress levels, trust me I have faced them all. This is one of the reasons why I wrote the post about digital detoxing in order for me to regain control, good thing is that think many people found it useful too even the stalkers lol. 7 Day Digital Detoxing Challenge highlights the importance of digitally detoxing and how you can do it, you should try it!

  • Start by decluttering your digital devices. Delete unnecessary files, apps, and programs that are taking up space and causing distractions. Organize your files and folders in a way that makes sense to you, making it easier to find what you need when you need it.
  • Take control of your notifications. Turn off irrelevant notifications that constantly pull your attention away from important tasks. Only allow notifications that are truly necessary and contribute to your productivity.
  • Unsubscribe from email newsletters and mailing lists that no longer serve you. Keep your inbox clutter-free by creating filters and folders to automatically sort incoming emails. This way, you can focus on the important messages without getting overwhelmed by a crowded inbox.

This is a big step to organizing life.

3. Engage in Mindful Practices

Practice Mindful Breathing

One of the simplest and most effective ways to declutter your mind is through the practice of mindful breathing. By focusing your attention on your breath, you can bring your mind into the present moment and alleviate stress and anxiety, in all honesty i thought this was a joke before, but actively doing it has made a huge difference for me and how I handle situations. Look here, this is wayyyyyy harder than it sounds. The mental aspect trust me takes some serious training. There are different breathing techniques that you can do, you can find these using apps such as Headspace or on YouTube.

  • To begin, find a quiet place where you can sit comfortably.
  • Close your eyes and take a deep breath in through your nose, allowing your tummy to expand.
  • Hold your breath for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly through your mouth.
  • As you breathe, notice the sensation of the air filling your lungs and the rise and fall of your chest.
  • Continue this mindful breathing exercise for a few minutes, allowing yourself to fully immerse in the experience. If your mind starts to wander, gently bring your attention back to your breath.

With practice, you will find that mindful breathing can help clear your mind, increase focus, and improve overall well-being.

Try Mindful Eating

Another unconventional way to declutter your mind is through mindful eating. Yea, I know for a fact this one sounds weird but instead of rushing through meals or eating on autopilot, practicing mindful eating which allows you to fully engage your senses and savor each bite. This one I really haven’t done but I have heard many say that its really good. I tried it a few times though I must say.

  • To begin, take a moment to appreciate the appearance, aroma, and texture of your food.
  • As you take your first bite, pay attention to the flavors and the sensations in your mouth.
  • Chew slowly and mindfully, savoring each bite and fully experiencing the taste and texture of the food.

By practicing mindful eating, you can develop a greater awareness of your body’s hunger and fullness cues, which can help prevent overeating and promote healthier eating habits.

Additionally, taking the time to truly enjoy your meals can bring a sense of calm and satisfaction to your day. But I know sometimes you just want to eat fast and move on with your day, but take a few minutes to be present in that moment. My fellow foodies understand this.

Incorporate Mindful Movement

Mindful movement is another effective way to declutter your mind and boost productivity. Whether it’s through yoga, tai chi, or simply going for a walk in nature, incorporating mindful movement into your daily routine can help you find mental clarity and reduce stress. I usually do this in the morning by having a nice stretch as I wake up, sometimes consistency can be hard, but I notice when I do it my days are a lot better.

During these mindful movements when organizing life, focus your attention on the physical sensations of your body. Notice the way your muscles contract and relax, the rhythm of your breath, and the feeling of your feet touching the ground. Allow yourself to be fully present in the moment, letting go of any distractions or worries. Just let it go bruh!

With this practice you can improve your mind-body connection, increase energy levels, and enhance overall well-being.

4. Prioritize Self-Care

When you prioritize self-care, you create a solid foundation for increased productivity and overall well-being.

Establish a Regular Sleep Schedule

I am the worst in this area, however I have noted the difference I have when I get rest vs when I don’t. I am a night person have always been and always will be lol. Getting enough sleep is crucial for your mental and physical health though. When you consistently follow a regular sleep schedule, you allow your body to rest and recharge it works out in your favor. Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night and try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day if you can. This is one of the best ways you can organize your life.

Engage in Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques are another one of the organization hacks for life. It can help reduce stress and promote a calm state of mind. Consider incorporating practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga into your daily routine as I stated before.

These activities can help clear your mind, improve focus, and boost productivity as we discussed earlier. Or whatever works for you, for me relaxation is sometime just sitting in front of the Playstation and playing a game that makes 0 sense but it just allows my mind to break from it all then another time I will play something intense, or for me cooking is a way that my mind relaxes, not my body but my mind.

5. Set Boundaries and Say No

Learning to set boundaries and saying no is essential for maintaining a clutter-free mind. It’s okay to prioritize your own needs and decline requests or commitments that don’t align with your goals or values. Look here this took a moment for me to get used to but now….psshh you get no’s once I feel like it. Some people get offended by it and sometimes you feel bad saying no, but hey for your own health it is what it is. By setting clear boundaries and learning how to say no, I have seen where I got to free up mental space and prevent unnecessary stress and overwhelm. Also please note boundaries don’t equate to disrespect.

Self-care is not selfish. There is a difference.

6. Connect with Nature

Spend Time Outdoors

Connecting with nature is a powerful way to declutter your mind and boost productivity. Spending time outdoors allows you to unplug from the digital world and immerse yourself in the beauty of the natural environment. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the mountains, or simply sitting in your backyard, being in nature can have a profound impact on your mental well-being.

Take a quick break from your busy schedule and step outside for a breath of fresh air. Go for a jog, have a picnic, or simply relax under a tree. The sights, sounds, and smells of nature will help clear your mind, reduce mental clutter, and allow you to focus better when you return to your tasks. As someone who works from home I try to practice stepping out for a second between lessons just to catch myself when I can.

Practice Grounding Techniques

Grounding, also known as earthing, involves physically connecting with the earth’s surface, such as walking barefoot on grass, sand, or soil. This simple practice has been found to have numerous health benefits, including reducing stress, improving sleep, and enhancing mood. At first I thought this was completely weird, but hey, it works!

When you practice grounding, you allow the earth’s energy to flow into your body, helping to balance and restore your mental and emotional well-being. It’s like pressing the reset button for your mind. So, find a quiet spot outdoors, take off your shoes, and feel the earth beneath your feet. Allow yourself to be fully present in the moment, absorbing the energy of the earth and letting go of any mental clutter or distractions.

Not only will grounding help declutter your mind, but it will also boost your productivity and help you organize your life by promoting a sense of calm and focus.

Remember, nature has a way of restoring balance and clarity to our lives. So a simple way to start organizing your life is by spending time outdoors and practicing grounding.

7. Practice Gratitude

Keep a Gratitude Journal

In our fast-paced and often stressful lives, it’s easy to get caught up in negativity and forget about the positive aspects of our day-to-day experiences. Keeping a gratitude journal is a simple yet powerful way to shift our focus towards the things we are grateful for.

A gratitude journal can be a physical notebook or an app on your phone; choose whatever works best for you. At the end of each day, take a few minutes to reflect on the positive moments, experiences, or people you encountered. Write them down in your journal, focusing on the specific details that made you feel grateful.

By regularly practicing this habit, you create a space to acknowledge and appreciate the good things in your life. It helps to reframe your mindset and cultivate a more positive outlook. Additionally, when you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed, you can revisit your gratitude journal to remind yourself of the things that bring you joy and gratitude.

Express Gratitude to Others

Expressing gratitude to others is not only beneficial for them but also for yourself. When you acknowledge and appreciate someone’s kindness, support, or contribution, it not only strengthens your relationship but also boosts your own sense of well-being.

Take a moment each day to express your gratitude to someone in your life. It could be a friend, family member, coworker, or even a stranger who made a positive impact on your day. Send them a heartfelt message, write a thank-you note, or simply tell them in person how much you appreciate their presence in your life.

Remember, expressing gratitude doesn’t have to be limited to grand gestures. Even small acts of appreciation can have a profound impact on both the recipient and yourself. By cultivating a habit of expressing gratitude, you create a positive ripple effect in your relationships and enhance your overall sense of fulfillment.

8. Challenge Negative Thoughts

It’s so easy for our minds to become cluttered with negative thoughts and self-doubt. I can personally speak on this for hours. These thoughts can hinder our productivity and prevent us from reaching our full potential. Here are two effective techniques for organizing life in this way:

Cognitive distortions are patterns of thinking that can lead to irrational thoughts and negative emotions. By identifying and challenging these distortions, you can gain control over your thoughts and promote a more positive mindset. Here are a few common cognitive distortions to be aware of:

  1. All-or-Nothing Thinking: This distortion involves seeing things in black and white, with no room for gray areas. Challenge this by reminding yourself that life is full of shades and complexities. Embrace the idea of progress, not perfection.
  2. Catastrophizing: Catastrophizing is when you blow things out of proportion and imagine the worst-case scenarios. Challenge this distortion by asking yourself: “What is the evidence for this catastrophic outcome? Is there a more realistic perspective?”
  3. Personalization: Personalization occurs when you take things personally and blame yourself for situations that are beyond your control. Challenge this distortion by reminding yourself that not everything is about you. Practice self-compassion and focus on what you can control.
  4. Mind Reading: Mind reading is when you assume you know what others are thinking, usually assuming the worst. Challenge this by questioning your assumptions and considering alternative explanations. Communicate openly with others to avoid misunderstandings.
  5. Overgeneralization: Overgeneralization involves making sweeping conclusions based on a single negative experience. Challenge this by looking for evidence that contradicts your negative beliefs. Remind yourself that one setback does not define your capabilities or worth.

By recognizing these cognitive distortions and challenging them with logical and rational thinking, you can declutter your mind from negative thoughts and create space for positive and empowering beliefs.

Replace Negative Self-Talk with Positive Affirmations

Negative self-talk can be incredibly detrimental to our overall well-being and productivity. It undermines our confidence and perpetuates limiting beliefs. To counteract negative self-talk, it’s important to replace it with positive affirmations. Positive affirmations are simple, positive statements that help reframe your thoughts and nurture a more positive self-perception. Here’s how you can incorporate positive affirmations into your daily routine:

  1. Identify Limiting Beliefs: Start by recognizing the negative beliefs or thoughts that arise most frequently. Are there any recurring themes or patterns? Once you identify these beliefs, challenge their validity and explore alternative perspectives.

Engaging in physical exercise is a fantastic way to clear your head. It definitely works for me.

Find an Exercise Routine You Enjoy

Exercise doesn’t have to be a chore; it can be a fun and enjoyable activity. The key is to find a workout routine that you genuinely look forward to. Whether it’s dancing, hiking, swimming, or playing a sport, choose an activity that gets your heart pumping and brings you joy. When you enjoy what you’re doing, it becomes easier to make exercise a regular part of your routine. Remember, it’s important to find something that suits your interests and fitness level to ensure a sustainable routine.

Take Regular Movement Breaks

Sitting at a desk all day can be mentally draining and hinder your productivity as I spoke about earlier. That’s where regular movement breaks come in handy. Instead of staying glued to your chair for hours on end, take short breaks to get your body moving. Stand up, stretch, and walk around for a few minutes. These breaks not only give your mind a breather but also help improve blood circulation, keeping you alert and focused.

During your movement breaks, try incorporating simple exercises like jumping jacks, squats, or even a few yoga poses. These quick bursts of physical activity will not only refresh your mind but also energize your body. You’ll be surprised at how much more productive you can be after a short exercise break!

Remember, engaging in physical exercise is not only beneficial for your physical health but also for your mental well-being. It helps release endorphins, which are known as the “feel-good” hormones, reducing stress and improving your mood. So, make exercise a huge priority and witness the positive impact it has on your mind and productivity.
